World of the Dead is a 2010 PC zombie horror/survival MMO game developed by Living Dead Media, founded by Night of the Living Dead director George Romero, and produced and marketed by BigBoy Games. Unlike traditional zombie games which are generally first-person shooters, World of the Dead invites players to use strategy to scavenge for food, build shelters, find other survivors and kill zombies within a randomly generated town. Players can share saved versions of their personal sandbox town with other players using the "Swap" function.
World of the Dead was released on November 10, 2010 to universally good reviews, with many critics citing it as the best game of the year and one of the most entertaining games of all time. Within two weeks it became the highest-selling game of 2010 and currently ranks as the #5 highest-earning game of all time. Three expansion packs, two with a single-player style campaign utilizing many of the skills developed in the sandbox version, have been released or planned for release: June 2011's World of the Dead: Breakout, December 2011's World of the Dead: Nightmare, and December 2012's upcoming World of the Dead: Awakening.
