William Clark (August 1, 1770 - September 1, 1838) was the 6th President of the United States, a military commander, territorial governor and explorer famed for the Lewis and Clark expedition to the US Pacific coast in 1803. Regarded as one of the best Presidents of all time, Clark presided over a vast American economic boom in the 1820's buttressed by mass immigration from Europe in the wake of the Napoleonic Wars, the admission of several new states, and the formation of the "National Party," to which the modern National Party traces its roots. Clark often ranks in the top five of historical rankings of US Presidents and presided over an era known as "Clarkian democracy" and the "Era of Good Feelings."
