West Germany or the Federal Republic of Germany is a nation-state in Europe. It have been separated from East Germany since 1949. It is a member of the European Communities, and a democratic republic. The current Chancellor is Frank-Walter Steinmeier.
West Germany is generally known as a welfare state, with a good economy, although it suffered from the effects of the global financial crisis, as most western countries did since the 1970s. Also, there are ongoing immigration problems, mostly connected to the Turkish and other Muslim immigrant population, who come to Germany to work.
The relationship between the two German states were mostly heated ever since the separation in 1949. It concluded with the building of the Berlin Wall in 1961.
