In 1170, Prince Madoc of Wales sailed to the Brendanias in an attempt to form colonies. The colonies they settled were in Florida, Cuba, Hispaniola, Bahamas, Jamaica, and Mobile, Alabama.
In 1170 the Celtic Union and Scandinavia had colonized much of northeastern North Brendania. Prince Madoc of Wales wanted to see the new land himself, and in 1170 set out to find it. He went to the new continent with 50 men and women with him. He explored the eastern seaboard before landing in Florida. He claimed the new land for Wales and started a settlement there known as Madoctown. The town flourished as many new resources were found. In 1180 Madoc returned on his 3rd trip to Madoctown. Once in Madoctown he led an expedition into the swamps of the Everglades. As little could be found in these swamps no settlements were formed there. Madoctown was the biggest settlement of New Wales and was the army headquarters as the settlement in Cuba was the naval headquarters. Madoctown was surrounded with a wall a since the First Colonial War .
Years after colonizing Madoctown another ship came to Madoctown. The ship, however, blew off course and landed in OTL Cuba. The people on the ship started their own colony, known as Cardiff, after the city they sailed from. The Welsh people as they were not sure where they were decided quickly to not start a war with the Natives and remain friendly. The Welsh and Natives traded with each other on the island and new technologies were passed. The island amazed the Welsh because during the winter it was not as cold as in Wales. Without bad winter weather to slow them down the Welsh built bigger and better houses. The Welsh managed to thrive on the island and sent expeditions to the surrounding islands. After contact was re-established with Madoctown Cardiff goods made it back to Wales. Soon Cardiff was made the naval headquarters of New Wales.
The Bahamas was the third colony of Wales. After colonizing Cardiff the Welsh set sail to discover the islands in the Caribbean Sea. Soon they discovered the 29 islands of the Bahamas. These islands quickly became colonized as it could supply them with sugarcane. Sugarcane was the main crop coming from the Caribbean and was a major supply of its economy. When the Bahamas were found people raced to colonize it. This race is known as "The Bahamas Race". The main settlement of the Bahamas is on Mount Alvernia, where a large tower exists that watches over the entire island. The Welsh also had to adapt to the rains and hurricanes. People had to build sturdier homes, so mines appeared on the 2,387 islets. Short-term settlements appeared on the islets. Fishing also was a major industry as a wide variety of fish could be found. Many people came to the Bahamas because of the sugarcane and fishing.
Jamaica was the fourth place the Welsh colonized. After colonizing the Bahamas the Welsh continued their colonization of the islands in the Caribbean. They soon landed on the shores of the 3rd largest island in the Caribbean, Jamaica. The coast was mainly colonized as it was near the sea and on a coastal plain. The Welsh soon found Kingston Harbour, one of the largest natural harbours in the world. Ships used this harbour to start a settlement close by, Swansea. Swansea soon grew into an important port for the Welsh. The Welsh did not only stay at the coast however. Expeditions were sent inland to discover what was there. These explorers discovered the Blue Mountains, and Blue Mountain Peak, the tallest point on Jamaica. On clear days the coastline of Cuba could be seen. This made the Welsh make a fort, Blue Fort, as it was high ground and could see all of Jamaica and the coastline of Cuba. While on the mountains it was discovered coffee could be grown, which sent a scramble of settlers wanting to get land for farms to grow coffee. On Jamaica sugarcane was still grown, but the coffee was close to matching it as almost more coffee was grown on Jamaica than sugarcane. Fishing was another important industry in Jamaica. Towns such as Swansea was important in the fish trade as it was a major port. Swansea later became the capital of Jamaica and was the base for the Welsh Jamaican Navy.
After the Welsh colonized the Caribbean the Caribbean Welsh manged to find Madoctown. The Welsh accepted the new colonies claim for Wales. With more people with them the Welsh began colonizing the Gulf of Mexico. After sometime the Welsh found the perfect place to put of port city, which is OTL Mobile, Alabama. The Welsh named the place Welshia and began colonizing it. The city was located on a river now known as the Welshia River. The Welsh went up this river to trade with the Native Americans. Ships also sailed from the river to Welshia making the city an important trading town. Soon Welshia grew with the new wealth it got from trading. Welshia also had one of the first drainage system in the Brendanias as rainfall was great in Welshia. Welshia, Cardiff (the one in Cuba), and Madoctown became nicknamed the "Welsh Tri-Cities" as each city was closely related in economy, military, and culture. The Port of Welshia was the most important part of Welshia as incoming ships had to go there and outgoing ships had to go there too. The Welshia Overland Route was a land-route that led to Welshia. It stopped at important cities along the way and the Route became known as the "Way to Welshia". Later as the western part of North Brendania was being colonized the route was expanded.
