History[]

The Waashi tribe have lived in the area around the large Dá?aw Lake for hundreds if not thousands of years, fishing, hunting and gathering food in the mountains and valleys. The arrival of an Álengsk army in 1632 into the area now known as Atsugkriga served to solidify the tribal boundaries of the mountain states and stop migrations, as well as hit the local tribes disastrously with disease.

The Waashi quickly came to terms with their new neighbours, supplying food and helping to provide safe passage on the first stage of the 'gullvega' back to Álengiamark. This only intensified rivalry with the Maidu to the north and raids from both tribes on each other were constant. The tribe was semi-aligned to the Patwin League to the north and west but during the Wars of Patwin Partition Waashiland officially kept neutral. Their scouts and elite troops were used by the Ohlone in their campaigns against the Yokuts and Kidütöka however. The tribe attempted to remain neutral during the Second Mexic-Leifian War but its few fertile valleys were used and ruined by Chinese forces traversing Waashi lands to attempt to flank the Mexic in the later stages of the conflict. Along with the severence of the gullvega it threatened impoverishment for the isolated state.

However, gold and silver deposits were discovered not long after the cease-fire which ended the long drawn-out conflict, and this attracted a small settlement of prospectors from around Leifia. The welcoming attitude afforded to the newcomers, as well as fair-minded government, fostered contacts with nations outside its region and ensured its long-term survival as an independent state. Complete freedom of religion was established in 1868 which drew a small influx of settlement from persecuted groups.

The water from Lake Dá?aw does not reach the sea, instead it drains to the northwest along the Kuyuinahukwa river into Maiduland and Kooyooe Lake. A new dam on the river just over the border in Maiduland diverts some of the water for irrigation projects along the border which has served to bolster relations between the two countries. Meanwhile a new hydro-electric dam provides electricity to Waashiland and its mountainous neighbours.

Eager to differentiate itself from its more autocratic, and Chinese-dominated, neighbours it has tried to make itself welcoming of outsiders and a small leisure economy is growing, based on good rail links and excellent alpinism opportunities.

Government[]

Waashiland is governed by a small single-chambered Diet which is elected every three years. The hereditary monarch has broad executive powers but mostly the government operates by consensus.
