Virginia (VA), officially the Commonwealth of Virginia, is a U.S. state located in the South Atlantic region of the United States. With a population of 10,176,615, Virginia ranks as the 9th largest state in the Union.
Virginia joined the Union on June 25, 1788, making it the 10th state to join. The state became a key battleground during the American Civil War and was where many of the bloodiest battles took place. The Battle of Richmond was a key turning point in the war, as it prevented any Confederate ambitions for an invasion of the North.
