[edit] History
The Dominion of Virginia secceeded from the United States in 1788 following the collapse of the Constitutional Convention.
Following its independence, Virginia was one of several powers that claimed the unorganised territory north of the Ohio river. Virginia attempted to gain sole ownership of the land, but since it was impeaded by New England's claims it declared war. Thus, the First Northwest War began in 1795.
However, New England, with British assistance, managed to hold on to most of its claim. The British also managed to gain the area immedietly to the north of the New England claim on the western side of Lake Michigan in the peace settlement of 1797, with the eastern side being jointly administered with New England. Virginia, offered to purchase the Connecticut claim from New England, but they where rebuffed.
In 1811, Virginia went to war with New England again over the Northwest Territory (Second Northwest War), due to the high Virginian settlement in the area. However, New England managed to defeat Virginia again, with more British assistance by 1814. Britain, however gained the entirety of the Virginian claim except its Ohio Territory.
In 1826, an alliance of Virginia and Pennsylvania declared war on Maryland, Delaware and New Jersey, due to the latter's blockade of their ports. However, Maryland called Britain for assistance against Virginian forces. The British managed to capture the entire Ohio Territory from Virginia, and kept it in the peace treaty of 1829.
