Venice is a Merchant Republic situated along the Adriatic littoral. It is currently Europe's largest trade centre and controls the trade flows within the HRE, Central Europe and the Balkans. The Genoese are a rival trade league but do not hold as much sway as Venice. It's capital Venice is the second largest city in Europe, beaten only by Paris.

Founding and Medieval History

The city of Venice originated as a collection of lagoon communities banded together for mutual defence from the Lombards, Huns and other invading peoples as the power of the Western Roman Empire dwindled in northern Italy. These lagoon communities formed the republic in 697 AD and elected their first Doge. The first Doges all attempted to create a dynastic succession but all ultimately failed. However Venice enjoyed a long period of peace throughout this time and slowly built a complex system of canals, bridges, bulwarks, fortifications, and stone buildings. Thus Venice began to rely on the sea for defense and offence and slowly began to extend its force south into the Adriatic. With the crusades Venice found new trading opportunities in the Levant. This prosperity brought envy and the Byzantine Empire attacked the assets of Venetian merchants within its Empire. This brought along the Venetian led Fourth Crusade which destroyed the Byzantine Empire.

15th Century

The 15th century brought about a more land based focus in Venice. Milan was repeatedly attacked and forced to cede first, Veneto and its rich textile industry, and then the valuable grain producing Po Valley and the important fortress of Brescia. Venice entered a period of rapid expansion with the republic establishing the nation of Croatia after a failed Hungarian attempt to reclaim Dalmatia. The Venetians also protected the remnants of the Byzantine Empire allowing them to rebuild and prosper.

The central Venetian territory in Northern Italy is directly governed by the Doge along with Dalmatia; generals govern the Adriatic forts and Kaffa, while admirals rule the Aegean Sea. The only Venetian territory with a non-military leader is Crete with its Governor.

Venice has two vassal states; Croatia and the Byzantine Empire. Venice has also extended influence across the Italian Peninsula with the states of Ferrara, Mantua, Modena, Lacques and Siena all in diplomatic union with Venice. This allows Venice to maintain a small fleet in the Western Mediterranean Sea.
