The city of Vancouver today.

is a city on the north bank of the Columbia River that encompasses the area to the west of Fort Vancouver, the city that was the capital of the Republic of Oregon from 1846 until 1978, when the capital was moved to the new planned city of Cascadia. Vancouver remains the most populated city in the Republic of Oregon and has tri-city status with West Boston and Fort Vancouver. The city is partially on the site of Vancouver Lake and Shillapoo Lake, lakes that were drained in the 1920s.
