The United States presidential election of 2004 was the 55th quadrennial presidential election. It was held on Tuesday, November 2, 2004. The contest was between Democratic Party candidate Governor of North Carolina Henry Raymond and Republican Party candidate Vice President John McCain.
Incumbent Republican President William Morgan was not eligible to serve a third term, which placed Vice President John McCain as the automatic front-runner of the Republican nomination. McCain was seen as the early favorite for the Republican nomination, and despite a contentious primary battle with other candidates, secured the nomination by Super Tuesday. McCain chose General Colin Powell as his running mate, and Raymond chose Representative Agee as his. Both major party candidates focused primarily on domestic issues, such as the budget, tax relief, and reforms for federal social insurance programs, though foreign policy was not ignored. Raymond's campaign center-piece was healthcare.
Foreign policy was the dominant theme throughout the election campaign, particularly Morgan's conduct of the War in Vilkovia and the establishment of democracy within the country. Domestic issues were debated as well, including the economy and jobs, health care, and moral values.
This was the first election where both major parties had nominated African-Americans to the positions of Vice President during the same cycle. This was also the first election where both political parties held their conventions in the same city, albeit different venues.
One faithless elector in Minnesota pledged their support to Senator John Edwards.
