|United States presidential election, 1996|
|November 5, 1996|
|Nominee||William Morgan||Jerry Brown|
|Running mate||John McCain||John Kerry|
|Red states pledged toward Morgan/McCain. Blue states pledged toward Brown/Kerry.|
Senator Morgan's chances of winning the election were essentially guaranteed in the middle of President Bradley's second term as his party had lost both the House and the Senate in 1994 for the first time in decades. Morgan was able to regain ground as the economy began to recover from the early 1990s recession with a relatively stable world stage. He went on to win the election in one of the closest elections in American history. The Republican Party was able to maintain a majority in both the House of Representatives and the Senate.
