The United States presidential election of 1972 was the 47th quadrennial presidential election, held on Tuesday, November 7, 1972. Incumbent President Hubert Humphrey declined to seek another term in office and endorsed Vice President Henry M. Jackson for the presidency. The election was one of the narrowest in history with Senator Richard Nixon narrowly winning 150,000 more votes than Jackson.
