During the Vietnam War, the United States negotiated Japan into sending Self-Defense Forces into Vietnam to fight alongside the United States military. Meanwhile, a nationalist movement happened in Hawaii, ending up with Hawaii strongly yearning for independence. The UN, fearing a Hawaii autonomy movement, which would have happened next, forced the United States to acknowledge that Hawaii was independent. The US reluctantly recognized their independence on August 6, 1975, but shortly thereafter, Hawaii suffered a smiliar situation to Texas when it seceded from Mexico; economic problems stemming from being such a small nation. The citizens of Hawaii then unanimously voted to become a part of Japan, with 86% of the citizens voting yes. Hawaii became a part of Japan on February 14, 1978, and was recognized by the United States as part of Japan on February 19, 1978.
Puerto Rico gained statehood on July 4, 2001, with a close vote for statehood, with 52% of the citizens voting yes.
