The United States presidential election of 1988 was the 50th quadrennial presidential election, held on Tuesday, November 8, 1988. Conservative Newton Gingrich, Representative from Georgia and 1984 Vice Presidential nominee, defeated Populist Lloyd Bentsen, former Vice President. Gingrich was the second president in a row to have hailed from the state of Georgia, and the first Conservative president.
