The United States presidential election of 1988 was the 51st quadrennial presidential election, held on Tuesday, November 8, 1988. Lowell Weicker, the Republican nominee, defeated Vice President Robert Byrd, the Democratic nominee.

Weicker's victory ended 16 years and four straight elections of Democratic prominence and increasingly strident anticommunism.
