The United States presidential election of 1980 was the 49th quadrennial presidential election. It was held on Tuesday, November 4, 1980. The contest, taking place shortly after the Newmarket Affair, was between incumbent Republican President John Ashbrook and his Democratic challenger, Senator for Washington State Henry Jackson, as well as Republican Congressman Pete McCloskey who ran on an "Independent Republican" ticket.
