The 1840 election was plaugued mainly by the panic of 1837. While the National Bank help alleviate much of the worst parts of the panic, the public was still angry at the Republicans, who they blamed for the recession. Also, many were angry at the renomination of Vice-President John Tyler, which many felt was a violation of the 13th amendment, although the 13th amendment only provides term limts for the President, and no other candiates in the Republican Party wanted the nomination. Still, the Republicans were popular, and won the election by a fair margin.
