The United Kingdom of Great Britain, Northern Ireland and Malta, colloquially known as the United Kingdom and abbreviated as the UK, is a mostly insular nation located in Western Europe. The nation is comprised of five countries: England, Malta, Northern Ireland, Scotland, and Wales. The United Kingdom is a constitutional monarchy, one of the oldest surviving monarchies in the world.

In 1956, the Crown Colony of Malta voted to be integrated into the United Kingdom. This was completed by 1960.

The United Kingdom of Great Britain, Northern Ireland, and Malta is a unitary state comprised of five countries. Since the 1990s, the countries have been moving towards devolution and each has its own local parliaments.
