The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, commonly known as the United Kingdom or simply Britain, is a sovereign state in Europe. Located off the coast of the European mainland, the country includes the two large islands of Great Britain and Ireland, as well as numerous smaller islands. The country shares no land borders with any other state.

The country was formed in stages by the union of the independent kingdoms of England, Scotland and Ireland, reaching its present extent after the Act of Union of 1801. Britain formerly ruled over a large proportion of the world in the form of a number of colonies, protectorates, mandates and dominions which were collectively known as the British Empire. Most of the Empire was granted independence during the 20th century, with the exception of a number of small outposts which are today known as the Overseas Territories. Many former parts of the Empire however continue to share a monarch with the United Kingdom and freely associate with it as part of the Commonwealth of Nations.
