The United Arab Republic (Arabic: الجمهورية العربية المتحدة, al-Ǧumhūriyyah al-ʿArabiyyah al-Muttaḥidah), also known as the U.A.R., was a nation which existed between 1958 until 1961. During the height of Arab Nationalism and Pan-Arabism, the UAR was established with the unification of Egypt and Syria. Despite support from other Arab republics (most notably Iraq and [North] Yemen), the union ended when Syria seceded in 1961. Egypt continued to be run under the same government until the death of Gamal Abdel Nasser in 1970.
