The foundations of what became the Russian Empire, Ukraine eventually found itself a part of that nation. It regained independence following the Russian Revolution of 1917, but was rapidly re-absorbed by the USSR in the early 1920s. After the close of World War II, the nation re-appeared, shifted farther to the west than it had been, but still centered on the ancient city of Kiev. Today a part of the Warsaw Pact, Ukraine remains firmly under the control of the Premier in Moscow.
