Ukraine (Україна) is a country in Eastern Europe. It is bordered by the Soviet Union to the north, east, and northeast, and Poland, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, and Romania to the west and southwest.
The region has been occupied since 32,000 B.C. During the mid to late middle ages, northern Ukraine was claimed by the tribal federation of the Kievan Rus'. Afterwards, Ukraine remained a part of Russia for the majority of the 12th through 20th centuries, finally gaining its independence from the Soviet Union in early 2017.
Following the nation's first national election in March of 2017,Arseniy Yatseyuk was elected as Ukraine's first ever president.
