The Kingdom of the Two Sicilies was one of the many states of which Napoléon I granted kingship to one of his family members. Initially the crown of Naples was granted to Napoléons brother Joseph in 1806. Only two years later however Jospeh was granted the crown of Spain and was replaced by Napoléons brother-in-law Joachim Murat, who had previously been the Grand Duke of Berg.

Of all Napoleonic satellite kingdoms Naples was the first to effectively break the ties with its former Imperial master.

After the conquest of the last Bourbon stronghold of Sicily in 1855 in what is generally know as the Sicilian Civil War the name Kingdom of the Two Sicilies which had already been in colloquial use was formalised and the two kingdoms were united.
