Tripolitania (Arabic: طرابلس), officially the Tripolitanian Republic (Arabic: جمهورية طرابلس), is a country located in the Maghreb region of northern Africa. Bordering the Mediterranean Sea to the north, Tripolitania lies between Cyrenaica to the east, Chad and Niger to the south, and Algeria and Tunisia to the west.
Tripolitania has the highest HDI in Africa and the sixth highest GDP (PPP) per capita in Africa as of 2009, behind Seychelles, Orange Free State, Morocco, Equatorial Guinea and Gabon. These are largely due to its large petroleum reserves and low population. Tripolitania is one of the 15 richest oil producing countries.
