The Treaty of Alliance between the Crown Union of the Kingdoms of Aragon, Majorca, Valencia, Sicily, Sardinia and Counties of Barcelona and Malta; and the Crown Union of the Kingdoms of Castile, Léon and Granada, known more commonly and simply as the Treaty of Barcelona, signed in the Aragonese city of Barcelona in 1407, formalised the creation of an alliance between the Crown of Aragon and the Crown of Castile. It was signed on 18 July 1407 by the monarchs of both countries.

PREAMBLE

THE Crown Union of the Kingdoms of Aragon, Majorca, Valencia, Sicily, Sardinia and Counties of Barcelona and Malta and the Crown Union of the Kingdoms of Castile, Léon and Granada both declare that our two countries from this day forth shall come together in the spirit of brotherly friendship in a single Iberian Alliance. So long as this Great Alliance exists, no quarrel shall exist between our glorious, blessed Crown Unions, and every co-operation between us shall be afforded.

For ease of reference, henceforth:

  • This document may be cited by its full name or as the Treaty of Barcelona;
  • The Crown Union of the Kingdoms of Aragon, Majorca, Valencia, Sicily, Sardinia and Counties of Barcelona and Malta shall be referred to as the Crown of Aragon;
  • The Crown Union of the Kingdoms of Castile, Léon and Granada shall be referred to as the Crown of Castile;
  • The Alliance between the Crowns of Aragon and Castile as will be structured in the Treaty to follow shall be referred to as the Alliance.
  • The Crowns of Aragon and Castile shall be collectively referred to as the Signatories.

ARTICLE I: Trade Arrangements

  1. The Crown of Aragon shall set the lowest possible tariffs on imports from the Crown of Castile entering the territories of the Crown of Aragon.
  2. The Crown of Castile shall set the lowest possible tariffs on imports from the Crown of Aragon entering the territories of the Crown of Castile
  3. Merchants from the Crown of Aragon or the Crown of Castile shall be free to operate within the other's territory, so long as they operate within the laws of the respective Crown.

ARTICLE II: Mutual Defence

  1. The Crown of Aragon promises that should the Crown of Castile come under attack by a hostile force, the Crown of Aragon shall declare war on the hostile force and come to the aid of the Crown of Castile.
  2. The Crown of Castile promises that should the Crown of Aragon come under attack by a hostile force, the Crown of Castile shall declare war on the hostile force and come to the aid of the Crown of Aragon.
  3. Should either Signatory be severely damaged by a defensive war, the other shall be obligated to assist the former through all means possible.
  4. Should either Signatory unilaterally declare war on an enemy, the other does not have any obligation to assist; however, should either Signatory render military assistance upon the other not under the terms of Mutual Defence, the recipient of said aid shall be obligated to in the event of victory share the spoils of war with the other.

ARTICLE III: Land Claims

  1. The existence of any Colonies or Land Claims placed by either Signatory shall be immediately recognised by the other. Thereafter, until the day where the Colony should be withdrawn or abandoned by its parent Signatory, the other Signatory will be prohibited from settling within a 50-kilometre of the colony which was established first.
  2. Should any Colonies of either Signatory be attacked by a hostile force, the other Signatory shall be obligated to assist the Colony as per the terms of Article II.

ARTICLE IV: Effective Dates

  1. This Alliance shall come into effect on the day of signing; the Governments of both Signatories shall have up to five years to initiate enforcement of the terms of the Alliance as outlined in the Treaty above.
  2. This Alliance shall remain in effect for a minimum of twenty years; the Alliance may be renewed through mutual consent by the Crowns of each Signatory.
  3. The terms of this Alliance are not inflexible, and may be amended and changed as changing times require; any amendments however require the mutual consent of both Signatories.
  4. Should this Alliance's term expire, and the Signatories do not wish to renew it, the terms of the Alliance as stated in the Treaty above shall no longer have any binding effect.

ARTICLE V: Miscellaneous

  1. This Treaty shall be copied into both Aragonese and Castilian and stored in the Royal Libraries of each respective Signatory.

RENEWAL

We, the Sovereigns of the Crown of Aragon and Crown of Castile, hereby reaffirm and verify agreement with the terms and conditions of this Treaty and Alliance, and extend its term for another 20 years from 1427 to 1447.
