[edit] Origins of the war

On 30 August 1940, under the Second Vienna Award, Germany and Italy forced Romania to give half of Transylvania to Hungary. The Hungarians received a region referred to as "Northern Transylvania", while "Southern Transylvania" remained Romanian. Hungary had lost all of Transylvania after World War I in the Treaty of Trianon. They had never surrendered the ambition of regaining the territory. the Antonescu government seriously considered a war with Hungary over Transylvania as an inevitability. Of course this new war would have to wait until after the expected "victory over the Soviet Union", which took place in 1945. for the last few years, large amounts of Romanian troops served on the Eastern frount, in order to 'Train' them, in preperation for any future war.

[edit] Opposing Forces

Romania After the War, Romania heavily rebuilt its army with large amounts of modern equipment brought of the Germans. Large numbers of Jet planes, mainly Me 262, along with some Ar 234c, Ta 183, Hs 132 and the Ju 187 'Warthog'. this gave the Forţele Aeriene Române (Romanian Air force) Immence superiority over the Hungarians. Most of the Romanian tanks ware Panther II, fitted with a gyrostabilized 88mm KwK L/71. these were crushingly superior to any hungarian tank apart from the T34/88r. the infantry mainly used the same weapons used in the second world war, including the ZB M-1924 bolt action rifle and the M41 Orita SMG. some elite troops used Stg 44 Assault rifles.

Hungary most of Hungarys equipment was obsolete, including its Toldi I light tanks, T-4 medium (Panzer IV), Nimrod SP AA Tanks, and Csaba armoured cars. relatively few of the new T34/88r, Hungarian produced T34/85s fitted with an 88mm KWK36 had reached the Troops defending Transylvania. the Magyar Legiero (Hungarian Air force) Had mostly obsolete Ta 152 Piston engined fighters. the infantry were mainly equipped with bolt action weapons.

On July 27th the Romanians launched 'Operation Carpathian Freedom'. the plan was for two armies, the 1st and 3rd, to drive into Transylvania and cut it off from hungary. then the 2nd army would drive up and retake transylvania.

The Opening Moves at 4:40 AM on July 27th, the massed Romanian Artillery batterys opened fire. a few hours later Romanian Ar 234C Jet bombers bombed Budapest. that day the romanian Air force ruled the skies, with only 1 plane, an Ar 234C shot down. massed Ju 187 and Hs 132 jets wreaked havoc on the hungarian Armies, destroying most of their Armour. the few tanks that survived the murderous air attacks were destroyed by the Romanian Panther II Tanks. though the Hungarians fought stubbornly, they were outclassed in both men and material.

The Hungarian plan was to break through to the pocket of troops in central transylvania and smash the armies driving in from the north. the hungarian 4th army would be used on the main drive. the hungarian forces would be equipped with large numbers of T34/88r, and secretly obtained from the germans, some 105mm Panzerschrecks and Fliegerfaust AA Missile launchers, to deal with the Romanian air superiority. the offensive was launched on the
