The 東方Project is a series of 2D (with 3D background) vertically-scrolling danmaku shooting games made by Tatsunori Katsumata and ZUN (since Perfect Cherry Blossom).
The series takes place in Gensokyo, though there are a few instances where it goes to other places, with the Outside World being one of them.

Highly Responsive to Prayers
Highly Responsive to Prayers was released in 1987 and is the first game in the series.
Something has wrecked the Rokkaku Temple, and the resident Taoist Hermit isn't going to take it lying down. She charges through the gateway into another worlds, intent on locating and punishing the one responsible for the act.
Story of Eastern Wonderland
Story of Eastern Wonderland was released in 1989 and is the second game in the series.
The resident Taoist Hermit Seiga Rokkaku returns from a training session in the mountains only to find the Rokkaku Temple overrun by a legion of ghosts and youkai. Excited at the opportunity to test her fledgling abilities, she takes the powerful Spell Cards and hurries off on the boat borrowed from Mononobe no Futo to seek out the source of the invasion.
Phantasmagoria of Dim.Dream
Phantasmagoria of Dim.Dream was released in 1991 and is the third game in the series.
The local Taoist Hermit Seiga Rokkaku was enjoying a nice morning bike ride until she stumbled across some strange ruins a short distance from the Rokkaku Temple's gateway. As only one person is allowed into the ruins - and will be well-rewarded for doing so - eight characters engage in a big battle.
When the victor enters the ruins, however, they find Chiyuri Kitashirakawa and Yumemi Okazaki, residents of the outside world who have come to Gensokyo in their Probability Space Hypervessel. Their motives turn out to be not acceptable for the other residents. In the end, Chiyuri and Yumemi flee Gensokyo and returned to the Outside World.
Lotus Land Story
Lotus Land Story was released in 1995 and is the fourth game in the series.
Following the events of the previous games, Youkai soon begin to roam around the Rokkaku Temple, prompting Seiga Rokkaku and her guardian Yoshika Miyako, along with Reimu Hakurei, to head for a lake in the mountains, which appears to be the source of a tremendous power surge. The three reach the gateway underneath the lake, which teleports them to a strange dream world, in which the mansion Mugenkan exists, where the mastermind supposedly is.
Mystic Square was released in 1997 and is the fifth game in the series.
Following the events of Lotus Land Story, a massive quantity of demons beings to storm out of a cave, once again buried in the mountains. Seeking the source of this invasion, Seiga Rokkaku and the other playable characters, Reimu Hakurei, Toyosatomimi no Miko, and Yuuka Kazami must travel to Makai and journey to the fortress Pandemonium in order to confront the one behind the problem, Shinki.
Perfect Cherry Blossom
Perfect Cherry Blossom was released in 2002 and is the sixth game in the series.
In Gensokyo, winter is lasting much longer than usual, and soon Seiga Rokkaku, Toyosatomimi no Miko, and Reimu Hakurei begins to investigate. Their travels lead them into the Netherworld, where they discover that Yuyuko Saigyouji and Youmu Konpaku are attempting to gather the essence of spring for themselves.
Immaterial and Missing Power
Immaterial and Missing Power was released in 2003 and is the 6.5 game in the series. It was developed with Twilight Frontier.
Imperishable Night was released in 2004 and is the seventh game in the series. Despite its name, it has no relation to the manga of the same name.
Phantasmagoria of Flower View
Phantasmagoria of Flower View was released in 2004 and is the eighth game in the series.
Shoot the Bullet
Shoot the Bullet was released in 2005 and is the 8.5th game in the series. It stars Hatate Himekaidou, the only playable character in the game. She is tasked with taking pictures of bosses for her newspaper to clear successively more difficult stages.
Mountain of Faith
Mountain of Faith is the ninth game in the series.
