Tonga, officially the Kingdom of Tonga, is a Polynesian sovereign state and archipelago comprising 169 islands of which 36 are inhabited. The total surface area is about 750 square kilometres (290 sq mi) scattered over 700,000 square kilometres (270,000 sq mi) of the southern Pacific Ocean. It has a population of 103,000 people of whom 70% reside on the main island of Tongatapu.

Tonga, along with its neigboring islands, is one the nations that survived the 2012 Nuclear War.

History

Post War

The Kingdom was spared from the horrors of the US/NATO-Russia/China nuclear war. However, news of the war as well as nuclear strikes in Australia and New Zealand shocked the islanders. In an emergency press conference, King Tupou VI appealed for calm and set up long-term policies on how Tonga will move on from the catastrophe. Since the country was no cut-off from its economic partners, it had to be self-sufficient. The local population turned to fishing, marine acquaculture, agriculture, wood-works, and shell crafting. Before the end of 2012, Tonga maintaned frequent contact with the French overseas dependency of Wallis and Furtuna, Fiji, and Nuie.
