Tōkyō (Japanese: 東京) is one of the 47 prefectures of Japan, is also the capital of Japan, and is the largest city in Japan as well as the largest city in the world. The city was formed around 1943 from merging the former Tōkyō Prefecture and Tōkyō City. There is also 23 special wards of Tōkyō, each of which is governed as their own city.

It all started with Tōkyō originally being a small fishing village, and named Edo. Soon in the 12th century it was fortified by Edo clan, and in 1457 Edo Castle was built by Ōta Dōkan. Finally, in 1590 Tokugawa Ieyasu made Edo his capital, and after he became shogun around 1603, Edo was made into a city and soon grew to be one of the largest cities in the world. It also became the capital of Japan, even though the Emperor lived in Kyoto. In 1869 Emperor Meiji moved to Edo. From then on, Edo became the capital of Japan, and soon Edo became Tōkyō.
