    • April: US declares formation of 'Great Western Territory', during reconstruction. Territory includes states of Kansas, Nevada and Oregon, and Washington, Idaho, Montana, Colorado, Utah, New Mexico, Dakota, Arizona and Indian territories. President Johnson announces reelection campaign for Democrats.
    • May: Riots erupt in Kansas and Oregon over retraction of statehood. Kansas governor Samuel J. Crawford leads calls for secession. Ulysses Grant chosen as Republican nominee for president.
    • July: Democratic convention. Winfield Hancock and Horatio Seymour chosen as Democratic nominees. Thomas Francis Meagher is saved from falling overboard by the pilot of the G.A. Thompson.
    • June: Kansas secedes from US, with Samuel J. Crawford as President and Commander-in-Chief of the newly formed Militia. Riots continue in Oregon, Nevada and Idaho. US sends troops. Ulysses Grant asked to command US army. He accepts, allowing Schuyler Colfax with Hannibal Hamlin to run for president and VP.
    • August: Oregon secedes, immediately annexing southern Washington.
    • September: Nevada, Idaho, Montana secede. With Oregon form Western Federation. Governor George Woods of Oregon elected President and Lieutenant Governor James S. Slingerland of Nevada elected Vice-President. Capital established at Corvallis, Oregon.
    • October: Battle of Ashland Mills in southern Oregon between rebel and Federal troops. Rebels succeed, causing President Johnson to call for more troops. Talks of reformation of CSA.
    • November: Election. Democrats elected after strong campaign in favor of war.
    • December: Confederate States of America redeclared in Baton Rouge. Immediately crushed by Federal troops. Colorado and Wyoming join Western Federation.


    • January: Western Federation recognized by Great Britain and Mexico. Great Britain forms alliance with Federation. Hancock inauguration - gives rousing inauguration speech. Appoints Allen Thurman Secretary of State and William H. Seward
    • March: Battle of Reno between Nevada Militia and Californian Federal Troops.
    • June: Great Western Army established, drawing troops from Oregon, Nevada, Idaho and Montana, and also from Washington, Wyoming and Colorado.
    • July: Washington invaded by Canadian and Western troops from northern border. President Hancock issues nationwide call for troops.
    • August: President Hancock assassinated by Western sympathizers during visit to Tennessee. VP Horatio Seymour succeeds as President under 1792 Presidential Succession Act.
    • October: Mexico invades California and Arizona Territory. Forms alliance with Western Federation. Mexicans begin to support Maximilian I.
    • November: Congress extended indefinitely. Seymour chooses Allen Thurman as Vice-President.
    • December: 'December Peace'. Talks begin on treaties at neutral Saint John, Newfoundland. Benito Juarez, the Mexican rebel, realizing popular opinion is against him, recognizes Maximilian I as true head of state on December 30. Public holiday declared as citizens rejoice in the streets


    • January: Treaty of Saint John signed by Horatio Seymour, Allen Thurman, Samuel Crawford, George Woods, James S. Slingerland, Sir John MacDonald, George Villiers (4th Earl of Clarendon) and Maximilian I. US recognizes Western Federation and Kansas. Forced to give up New Mexico and Gadsden Purchase to Mexico and UP of Michigan and Northern Maine to Canada. Reparations made to Britain.
    • April: Horatio Seymour impeached for conduct during "War of the West". Accusations of Western sympathizing and his infidelity run rampant. House votes in favor of impeachment by large majority.
    • May: Seymour convicted by thin majority in Senate. Allen Thurman becomes 4th President in 2 years.
    • August: President Thurman meets with Presidents Woods and Crawford in Minneapolis. Disgraced Generals Ulysses S. Grant, George Henry Thomas and William T. Sherman decry the meeting.
    • September: Ulysses S. Grant announces formation of American Republican Party. Southerners flock to the party after Grant promises economic and social measures to aid Southern businesses.
    • December: Thurman organizes tour of southern states to promote himself. Is soundly booed at most events.


    • February: Thurman assassinated in New Orleans. Riots occur.
    • March: Speaker of the House James G. Blair, a Half-Breed Republican becomes President. He announces his intention to join the American Republican Party and decries the current situation.
    • May: Blaine nominates Ulysses Grant as his Vice-President.
    • June: Blaine and Grant tour Southern States.
    • July: Fourth of July Convention announced in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Representatives from every state invited to attend. At end of convention, states are on more cordial and friendly terms. Thomas F. Meagher elected President of the Western Federation by a large majority over incumbent George Woods.
    • August: President Meagher of Western Federation inaugurated.
    • October: President William Crawford of Kansas tours North America and Europe, visiting Western Federation, Mexico, United States, Canada, Great Britain, France and Prussia.
    • November: General Juan Prim of Spain assassinated. Carlist riots occur in Catalonia and the Basque Country.


    • January: Germany unified. King of Prussia Wilhelm II proclaimed Kaiser of Germany.
    • March: Heirs to the Mexican throne Crown Prince Agustin and Prince Salvador die of cholera in Veracruz. Nation mourns the loss.
    • August: Maximilian I announces that Leopold of Bavaria, his maternal cousin, shall succeed him.
    • December: After continued rioting by his supporters, Carlos, Duke of Madrid, proclaims himself King of Spain. He is crowned in Madrid in January.
