- 30 October- Columbus leads a second expedition of nineteen ships to the New World, carrying a large group of settlers. The group settles at La Isabela, Hispaniola. Thousands of natives are enslaved and used as forced labor to build the town or shipped back to Spain
- 24 November- a small gold mine is established in Cuba, worked for the Spanish crown by slaves

- 1 August- Columbus returns to Spain aboard a trading vessel

- 26 April- The British expedition lands in the New World. The settlement they founded is known as St. John’s
- 13 May- The British government launches a large-scale advertising campaign for voyages to the New World
- 14 June- Upset by his practices and his lack of significant gold income, the crown tasks Columbus with making a third journey to explore the area to the south of the Caribbean
- 15 July- Columbus arrives in Central America and leads 500 men into Peru

- 1 February- George Calvert, 1st Baron Baltimore is granted a charter to the Chesapeake Bay by the British monarchy
- 16 June- Calvert sponsors a voyage of 200 colonies and 50 soldiers to the Chesapeake Bay. They name their site Annapolis. The early settlement becomes very dependent on the British settlements in the area and the natives but soon begins developing farms

- The Second Russo-Turkish War begins

- 15 September- Feldmarschall Ernst Gideon Freiherr von Laudon of Austria leads an army to besiege an Ottoman Turkish force in the fortress of Belgrade
- 8 October- The city of Belgrade is taken by the besieging Austrian forces

- 1 September- Austrian and Russian forces push south meeting Ottoman resistance near Demirköy. Plagued by disease and lack of supplies the Russian and Austrian armies retreat
- 5 November- The Russo-Turkish War officially ends. The region of Yedisan and Bessarabia is ceded to Russia. Parts of southern Serbia and Bosnia are returned to the Ottoman Empire
