- July The pregnant Queen Victoria is shot while riding with her husband Prince Albert in London, an event unexpected by all. Albert escapes unharmed while Victoria is fatally wounded in the neck, killing both mother and child. The heir Ernest Augustus, a son of George III, proclaims himself king. The Prime Minister Viscount Melbourne refuses to recognize him as king. Ernest Augustus is hated by almost all Whigs and even some Tories.
- August The Viscount Melbourne resigns. He cannot bring himself to have Ernest Augustus as king, and Ernest Augustus' son George is blind. The nation is in a state of crisis.
