Since the foundation of the Second International in 1889, the organization has maintained extremely clear and precise records of the History of the Rise of Socialism and Communism. Co-written by extremely well-known socialists and communists, like Debs and Lenin themselves, the History is a continually evolving encyclopedia.
The start of the encyclopedia is the Timeline, which has immense significance as a historical record.
US Supreme Court upholds the use of indictments to enact the Federal will in the case In re Debs. The economy is still in a depression, with unemployment at 14%.
US Supreme Court issues the ruling of "separate but equal" in the case Plessy v. Ferguson. Later, William Jennings Bryan is nominated for the Democratic candidate for the Presidency. He defeats William McKinley in the general election.
The American battleship USS Maine is sunk in Havana Harbor. This leads to immense pressure from the Democratic party to declare war on Spain. After an ultimatum was issued by Congress, Spain declares war on the United States. The Spanish-American War follows.
Bryan wins the Spanish-American War, securing independence for Cuba, Puerto Rico and the Philippines.
Bryan is re-elected in a landslide over Mark Hanna. The International Workers Union is also formed this year, under the leadership of Debs as a replacement for the ARU.
The Socialist Party is established this year, under the leadership of Debs and Gompers.
