Inter-War Period (1933-1939)
1933: Adolf Hitler comes to power in Germany, rearming the disgraced German war machine after being limited due to the Treaty of Versailles. The British and French are wary of the new leadership but are confident that it won't be a problem. Franklin Roosevelt is elected President of the United States. One of the first concentration camps is completed on March 20th in Dachau. The Gestapo is established on April 26th, Hitler bans all political parties turning Germany into a single party state. Germany leaves the League of Nations.
1934: The German Police Force is put under the command of Heinrich Himmler on March 20th. The SS murders all anti-Nazi politicians. President Hindenburg dies, Adolf Hitler takes over the country and proclaims himself Führer as well as becoming Head of State. The Soviet Union joins the League of Nations after the end of the Revolution in 1922 solidified the nation as a communist state. An armed confrontation between the Italian and Ethiopian armed forces starts the Abyssinia Crisis.
1935: The League of Nations allows Germany to annex the Saar region. Germany and Britain sign the Anglo-German Naval Agreement allowing Germany to expand is naval capabilities. The United States becomes a neutral power after signing the 1935 Neutrality Act. Tensions are increasing in Europe as Nazi Germany rearms their military forces.
1936: Germany violates the Treaty of Versailles by invading and annexing the Rhineland, the League of Nations takes no action as the French government becomes wary of Hitler. The Italian government declares the War in Ethiopia a massive success after Italian troops capture Adis Ababa. Germany hosts the Winter Olympics in the hope to show the superiority of the Aryan Race. The Soviet Union commences 'The Great Purge', killing any suspected opponents of the government, it leads to the imprisonment and death of many Soviet Generals, severely weakening the Red Army. Nazi Germany and the Empire of Japan sign the Anti-Comintern Pact, the pact outlines should a Communist nation should invade either nation, the nations will declare war on the invading nation.1937: The Second Sino-Japanese War starts after the skirmishes at the Marco Polo bridge escalate into full scale conflict as the Japanese Empire invades China and gains the upper hand by the end of 1937. King George IV is crowned in Westminster Abbey. Italy joins the Anti-Comintern Pact. The Japanese establish a puppet state in northern Mongolia, tensions with the United States are increased after the Japanese attack the USS Panay, killing three naval officers and wounding 45.
1938: The German military invades Austria, the Wehrmacht troops are greeted by pro-Nazi citizens lining the streets. Adolf Hitler formalises the annexation of Austria on March 15th in Vienna. The Soviet Union and Japan engage in border skirmishes.
1939: On January 25th, US scientists split the atom at the University of Colombia. Two days later Adolf Hitler orders Plan Z, a five-year naval expansion program intended to provide the German Navy (Kriegsmarine) with a force large enough to possibly defeat the Royal Navy. The Slovak Republic is founded and allies with Hitler. One day later, Hitler invaded Czechoslovakia and annex it into the German Reich, Germany and Romania sign the German-Romanian Treaty for the Development of Economic Relationships. Francisco Franco is is the head of the new Spanish dictatorship after the Civil War ended in Nationalist victory. Italy invades Albania. The Wehrmacht plans 'Fall Weiss', the German invasion of Poland. Hitler renounces the Anglo-German Naval Treaty.
