Thomas Sovereign Gates Jr. was President of the United States of America. He was born on 10 April 1906 in Germantown, Pennsylvania, and died on 25 March 1983 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
Being vice president, he succeeded president John Foster Dulles on his death on 24 May 1959, and took office as president. He belonged to the Conservative Party. During the election of 1960, he was defeated by the Democrat John F. Kennedy, who succeeded him as president on 3 January 1961.
