The War to End all Wars
In Sarajevo, 1914, Gavrillo Princip's pistol misfires, wounding his hand. The Archduke is unharmed, he is not even made aware of the event. The Austro-Hungarian Empire does not declare war on Serbia
Ascendancy of Franz Ferdinand
On 31 November, 1916, Emperor Franz Joseph I of Austria dies. (ten days later than in OTL, due to lack of stress caused by war.) Ferdinand organizes a mass hunt in honor of the Franz Joseph, involving the death of over 2000 animals.
He immediately orders the construction of ten Dreadnought-class warships, of German design, with British consultants.
Germany continues to build warships, increasing its number of dreadnoughts, destroyers and submarines by fifty percent. The British respond by developing a force of dreadnoughts nearly the size of the French navy. By 1917, their navies are both at double their OTL 1914 levels.
Russian Revolution (1918-1925)
The Russian Revolution occurs, one year behind schedule. For the first two years, the revolutionary Red Army is brutalized by Imperial forces. The death of Vladimir Lenin in 1920 results in an uproar, leading to a total revolt. The Czar's allies (Britain and France) contribute troops to aid the regime. The International White Army, British Regulars and French poilu, fight the Socialists back. However, the Winter and Spring of 1921 teaches the European powers several lessons on outdoor survival and maintenance of weapons in poor conditions. The British also realize a need for increased infantry firepower. The Canadian Volunteer Corps purchases Remington Model 8 Semi-automatic rifles, winterizing and mud-proofing the weapons, they use them to great effect. The British and French armies purchase them from the FN company in Belgium. They nearly defeat the Red Army in Summer of 1921.
Covert Triple-Alliance Action
The German and Austro-Hungarian Empires contribute professional officers to train the Red Army, as well as German machine guns and rifles. The 'Entente' powers learn of this, and fund, supply and train Yugoslav nationalists and German Dissidents.
Joseph Stalin is killed in the fighting, as the German Empire equips the Red Army with submachine guns, the MP21, (this Timelines equivalent to the MP18). The Russian Empire is split into the Soviet North and Ukraine and the Imperial South and Siberia. For four years there is sporadic warfare, ending in 1925. The Central Asian territories become independent nations; Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Karakalpakstan (western OTL Uzbekistan), Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Kyrgyzstan, and Uyghurstan (Parts of Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan and China). They form the Turkestan Alliance.
During this time:
Talbot Mercer Papineau becomes Prime Minister of Canada, Stanley Baldwin becomes PM of Britain, and Trotsky becomes Premier of the USSR.
World War looms (1926)
The Soviet Union (Northern Russia and Ukraine) enters the Triple Alliance in secret, in 1929. Due to a large number of factors, including a lack of hyperinflation in Germany, expenditure on metal and shipbuilding in the Naval Arms races, there is no Great Depression.
In 1931, the British Second North Sea Fleet (ten dreadnoughts, ten destroyers and two battlecruisers), comes into contact with the ad hoc Soviet Navy. They fight, the converted civilian ships of the Soviets being destroyed by the British fleet. Germany delivers an ultimatum, for reparations to be given to the Soviet Union.
Britain refuses, as it creates the Counter-Socialist Pact with the United States, to defend against an attack by the USSR. Germany declares war on Britain, the German High Seas Fleet, and the remnants of the Soviet Navy, attack the English Channel Fleet, in a bloody draw.
Land War Begins (1927)
The USSR and Imperial Germany launch a seaborne invasion of England, capturing eastern England up to the outskirts of London. The British Empire digs into London and along the Scottish border. Colonial armies from Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and India. The French attack Germany, capturing the Alsace and Lorraine regions.
The war descends into Trench warfare on all fronts, the British immediately begin developing plans to win the war, having learned many lessons in the Russian Civil War.
The Ottoman Empire launches an invasion of Iran. For two years, the ruling Qajar dynasty is defeated, and the Ottoman Emperor was seated as Shah.
Escalation of Land War
The United Kingdom organizes a mass attack along the Scottish line, using Scottish, Newfoundland and Canadian regiments. It flounders, causing over half a million casualties. But, UK and ANZAC troops, using mass use of trench raiding, push the Germans down the Thames, clearing out southern England.
German Forces stationed in England use massive gas attacks to great effect, breaking the line in three places. Two sections of that line occur on the Scottish line, the centre is held by the Canadian Corps, with great loss of life. Over twenty-five thousand civilians die as they attempt to re-enter London, in a misguided attempt by British High Command to instill morale on the Home Front.
The Browning Automatic Rifle, M1927 (OTL M1918) is produced by Browning Repeating Arms Co, issued to US Army Rangers, USMC, and the Belgian Army as part of FN's contracts with Browning. The British Government enters a joint contract with the American government to produced Armored Cars and Tanks based off of Ford Cars.
The Ottoman Empire attacks British India, diverting the majority of Indian Troops to the subcontinent.
Second U.S.-Mexican War
The various nations of Central America form a new nation under prompting by the U.S. Government, and that of Britain, in an attempt to stabilize the region so close to its Caribbean territories. The Central American Federation is born, comprised of every nation in the region. The Federation is threatened economically and militarily by Mexico, the United States offers it a position as a U.S. Commonwealth territory, much like Puerto Rico, which it accepts.
The Mexican Army, unaware of this new alliance, invades the CAF, and war is declared by the US. Ford F-Tanks, heavily armored Model A (1927 Model), armed with two BAR M1927s and a Hotchkiss M1924 (M1914 in OTL). The F-A-Tank used a custom-designed two-inch Mortar and a single BAR as weapons. The F-I Carrier Tank could carry up to four infantrymen, armed with Remington Model 8 Rifles, like the British Commonwealth Armies. The American Armored Cavalry decimates the Mexican Army, capturing Mexico City within a month.
Mexico is forced to pay for reparations, similarly to the first war, and Baja California is made part of the State of California. Also, the Mexican Government is forbidden from making any form of international decision making without U.S. consent.
The Central American Federation and Puerto Rico join the United States as the fiftieth state, called Hispana.
(Alaska joins the U.S. as the 51st state on time with OTL)
War in Europe Continues (1929 On)
The British Army uses the Ford F-Tanks to great effect against German invasion, as well as American BARs. The French-German campaign produces great casualties, over two million casualties on either side. The Germans develop the Automatisches Gewehr 1929, the AuGe-29, the first true assault rifle. They also produce the A7V tank, which although few in numbers, it devastates British Tank Formations.
