The Foundation of the Kingdom of Satavahana[]

The Satavahana were a family from Maurya India who left their home country after being threatened by the growth of power of the Maurya Samraats (Emperors). The Satavahana family moved out of the country when the Samraat was looking for food after the Great Famine of 843 (90 AD). They moved to Africa where they took control of the island of Madagascar as well as some of the lands of Coastal Africa, those not claimed by the Ethiopians. For the beginning years of the life of the Satavahana Kingdom the main source of money for these people was still the country which they had left. They used these funds to build the necessities of a government and especially a military. At the same time the Satavahana, ostensibly, pledged their allegiance to the Maurya Samraats and this gave them time to build up enough resources to stand on their own feet. This came when they refused to trade with the Maurya, though they did not need the Satavahana food stuffs as much as they did during the famine. The Maurya ignored the new kingdom and dismissed it as a "mosquito on the arm of the great Maurya" according to one high ranking bureaucrat. the Satavahana began to develop a close relationship with the Srivijaya Empire, a coutnry with which they had a murual enemy in the Maurya. They gained the religion of Thenmobism in their trade with the Srivijaya, the diplomacy between these coutnries would lead to the first major war which the Satavahana Army had fought, the War of the Indian Ocean.
