A few thoughts, to be expanded later.

• Korea would likely be Japan's first conquest.
• Early conflicts with China are probable
• What is *here* easternmost Russia would likely be Japanese *there*. Alaska, too, is likely Japanese. I suspect most of Japan's efforts would be focused on Asia, actually. Indonesia, SE Asia, the Philipines, Australia. Some colonies in western North America, but not a major factor, I think.

The biggest question is how to keep Japan from becoming isolationist - also, the question of whether it was Tokugawa *there*, too, who succeeded in unifying Japan. One interesting possibility is Oda Nobunaga surviving longer.

If you would also supply names for those areas conquered. I figure that you, Nik, know a great deal about the region and your input on this althist will be invaluable. Louisiannan

I also think it would be interesting to explore a pan-pacific japanese empire, with a significant west coast presence, equating to IB's Montrei, who build up a great military might with the consolidation of knowledge from western cultures and gunpowder. Louisiannan

Could it have been earlier, with Taira no Kiyomori?

Don't think so. Japanese military might was pretty low in those days. It wasn't until the Mongols' attempted invasions that Japan really beefed up its military, out of a fear of a third attempt. That build up lead in large part to the decentralization that eventually lead to the Warring States Era. I think the reunification of Japan provides the best chance for a greater Japanese Empire. I have a proposal that woudl require a name-change to this timeline.  :-) Toyotomi Hideyoshi's invasion of Korea was successful, due to the death of Yi Sun-sin at some point before the Invasion of Korea. This leads to Japanese success in Korea. It also leads to Toyotomi's strongest supporters remaining strong, and prevents the rise of Tokugawa. Instead, Toyotomi's family remains the rulers of Japan under the courtly title of Kampaku. The shogunate thus died out with the last of the Ashikaga shoguns in 1573. Nik 01:23, 23 Mar 2005 (EST)

Note: Most of these names have since been changed, these were early provisional ideas My suggested names

• Chūyōshotō = Mid-Ocean Islands = Hawaii
• Luzon = Phillipines (possibly just the north)
• Shinkoku = New Land = Australia
• Tōbankoku-dō = Eastern Barbarian (Beautiful) Land Circuit = West Coast of North America
• Ming = A Japanese protectorate in south China, led by elements of the former Ming Dynasty.
