Talk:Second Great War (Cold Phoney War)

From Alternative History

Jump to: navigation, search

A few random thoughts:

  • Without a prolonged war, Canada could avoid the conscription crisis and so take away one factor of the polarisation between francophones and anglophones citizens.
  • With Japan on the commonwealth side, Australia might more or less sit out the second great war.
  • In India, German sponsored Azad hind legion (and its leader Chandra Bose) could have been a serious threat as either a rebel force controling part of the country or as an underground terrorist group.
  • De Gaulle's Free French forces might have set up a rival government in the colonies.
I have not check the conflict in North Africa but I think that soon Free France operations would be based in Algeria.
  • The USA staying neutral might make them become even more involved in south and central american affairs. They could end up in the odd position of supporting *leftist* factions against Germany backed dictators or become at odds with the UK in their area of interest (maybe even an open conflict over the falklands).
I had deviced the USA being isolationist, at least regarding European affairs. FDR wins in 1940 but does not even run in 1944, followed by an isolationist Republican. (Who?) Still, Latin America will continue being USA's backyard.
  • With a need to distance itself from Germany, the UK might adopt a more socialistic policy both at home and in regard to part of the commonwealth (maybe avoiding a decolonisation conflicts).
I think that India would be decolinized (the other alternative would be incorporating that huge and populated subcontinent as an integral part of the UK: the United Kingdom of Great Britain, Northern Ireland, and India...), but that the British Empire outside India is somehow preserved.
  • The thruce between the UK and Germany could have included provisions to stop supporting groups actively involved in fighting the other camp. Even if not completely respected afterward, this could have lead to resentment on the part of some factions.
