Review[]

The Great British Review continues. The news items on this page exhibit some of the patterns on other pages that create implausibilities. Some general things:

  • An unrealistically fast pace. Elections that should take weeks or months take days. Construction projects that should take years take just a week or so. A census that should be months of work is completed in a single day. Correcting this will require some changes to the actual dates of some news items.
  • Too many referenda, too quickly. In six months, Cleveland has a referendum on a future name, one on CA membership, and a general election. The name once seems unnecessary, since unification is far from imminent. Maybe replace it with an officially sanctioned survey or poll instead. This would deliver the same information without the expense of holding a vote.
  • Consistency with other agreed-upon changes resulting from this review. This includes:
    • Specify that Liverpool and Glasgow were hit and destroyed by nuclear weapons - it always stretched plausibility to think that both could somehow escape.
    • Fix the "Fog of War" effect that assumed that most places in Britain would have zero contact with one another until discovered decades later by official expeditions.
    • Replace Albion with Northumbria (and replace Northumbria with Northumberland).
    • Make the 2010 royal visit less of a pure triumph.
    • Change the Ur Alba War to the Galloway War and add more context to its outbreak.

These things won't affect every news item, but they will affect lots. I'll always try to respect the spirit of the work and the creativity that went into it. False Dmitri (talk) 20:41, 3 January 2023 (UTC)

As I work through these, the first bullet point above is the one that characterizes the largest number of news items. Smoggy was using this page to wank Cleveland at an unbelievable pace. I think she was just impatient to have her country succeed, and you can also detect more than a whiff of Command & Conquer or other strategic construction-based games. I'm using two main methods to make changes. First, I've modified some items so that they describe steps in a long process, not finished projects. Second (much less frequently), I've moved some news items to later dates. In some cases (the oil rigs, for example), I've done both: moved the date and made the event more preliminary. It's about 2/3 done. False Dmitri (talk) 13:09, 18 January 2023 (UTC)

I was waiting on Trainor90 to finish his updated election maps. Now that's done, and so is this review. False Dmitri (talk) 21:32, 19 July 2023 (UTC)
