probably for the same reason many ex-soviet states didn't go back to their antebellum status: times changes and a republic-style government tend to make it easier to manage various factions.

also, they might prefer to make a clean break with the past, a few monarchs probably had links with tthe nazi regime so that the entire family and concept could appear "tainted" in the eyes of the population.--Marcpasquin 14:43, 21 May 2005 (UTC)
