Taiwan, officially the Republic of China is a sovereign state in South-East Asia. It formally occupied mainland China, but during the Chinese Civil War it was pushed back to the island of Taiwan, being replaced by the PRC in the mainland in 1949.

History

Taiwan was recognized by the United States and majority of the world as the true ruling body over the communist mainland from 1949 to 1971, when the UN Security Council replaced Taiwan with the People's Republic of China. The United States terminated the Sino-American treaty of cooperation in 1980 but nonetheless continues to supply military hardware and equipment to the nation. Taiwan experience three Strait Crisis: two from the 1950s and one in 1995-1996. The United States was mainly involved in this conflict by sending its naval forces to deter China.

2016 Elections

Taiwan elected its first female president, drawing criticisms from mainland China.

Alleged Involvement in Tibet and HK

Chinese state media have reported that Taiwan, alongside with India, Japan, the United States, the United Kingdom, Scotland, and the Philippines have been supporting opposition forces both in Tibet and Hong Kong. The country denies it.
