The United States of Greater Austria, or USGA, was comprised of 18 states of various sizes. Originally, the state borders had been proposed according to the extents of the various ethnic groups, but when Austrian Emperor Ferdinand II began to implement the plan, the borders were adjusted to line up with natural borders, for instance, East Galicia was originally proposed to own a salient of land between Slovakia and West Galicia, but which was given to West Galicia when the final borders were drawn. Other instances include the enlargement of Vojvodina at the expense of Croatia, and a smaller state of Hungary at the benefit of Slovakia and West Galicia.
