Due to a series of successful measures, but most of all to the strength shown by their rulers coupled with political will, the Spanish Empire reinvented itself, transforming into a Union of Nations.
Fernando VI de Borbón, at the request of his minister Zenón de Somodevilla y Bengoechea, marqués de la Ensenada (1702 - 1781), denounced the treaty of Madrid or 'Permuta' signed shortly before with Portugal, which inaugurated a period of strength in real decisions about the other European powers. Troops are sent, organize auxiliaries of Guarani and guards the border east of the River Uruguay (Banda Oriental and Misiones). Fernando VI's example will be followed later by his successors, Carlos III, Carlos IV and Fernando VII.
