World War III[]

Because of its NATO membership, Spain contributed troops for the allied war effort against the Soviet Union when West Germany was invaded. American forces coming from REFORGER convoys from the US mainland would dock in NS Rota. USAF fighter jets from Great Britain would often stop at Moron AB. The Spanish Navy cooperated with other naval vessels from the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Italy, and Greece during the First Battle of the Mediterranean, but was routed back to Strait of Gibraltar when the Soviets decimated the US 6th Fleet and other allied ships. The Balearic Islands were invaded as a result of the Soviet success, alongside the islands of Corsica, Malta, Sardinia, as well as the coast of southern France. It, along with the allies, then formed a blockade of the strait, preventing any Soviet ship from leaving the Mediterranean into the Atlantic Ocean. Notably, the blockade of the strait saw the cooperation of the UK and Spain, often strained and shaky due to the dispute of Gibraltar. When some ships of the Soviet Navy managed to sneak past the blockade, fighter jets from the Royal Air Force, the US Air Force, and the Spanish Air Force would sink these. The headquarters of NATO relocated to Barcelona during the war, as Brussels Belgium was frequently targeted by bombers of the Soviet Air Force.

The aircraft carrier Principe de Asturias, newly commissioned in 1988, would take part in the blockade of the Straits of Gibraltar to the liberation of the Balearic Islands.
