Spain (Spanish: España), officially the Spanish State (Spanish: Estado Español) is a sovereign state located on the Iberian Peninsula in southwestern Europe. The Spanish mainland is bordered to the south and east by the Mediterranean Sea except for a land border with British-controlled Gibraltar; to the north and northeast by France, Andorra, and the Bay of Biscay; and to the west and northwest by Portugal and the Atlantic Ocean.
Spanish territory also currently includes two archipelagos; the Balearic Islands and the Canary Islands, and two exclaves; Ceuta and Melilla. The country is currently ruled by Francisco Franco, who successfully overthrew the Second Spanish Republic in the Spanish Civil War and is currently rebuilding the Spanish mainland after three years of consolidating his position as Caudillo, or Head of State. He is also currently trading with nations such as Germany and Italy. On 14 May 1939, he signed defensive pacts with both countries.
