Spain, officially the Socialist Spanish Republic (Spanish: Socialista República Española), is a sovereign socialist state and a member of the Warsaw Pact located in southwestern Europe on the Iberian Peninsula. The Second Spanish Republic was proclaimed when King Alfonso XIII left the country following municipal elections in which Republican candidates won the majority of votes. It is a developed country with the twelfth largest economy in the world by nominal GDP, and very high living standards, including the tenth-highest quality of life index rating in the world. It is a member of the Collective International Union, Warsaw Pact, and COMECON.
