[edit] History

In 1519, Charles I of Castille and the Indies inherited the crowns of Aragon, Navarre, Granada, Naples, Jerusalem, etc. from his grand-father Ferdinand of Aragon. Charles, future Emperor Charles V of the HRE, united his Iberian possessions as Spain and set the capital at Madrid.

Once in possession of almost all the Americas, the English, the French and the Portuguese carved parts of the Americas.

In 1801, Spain still controls most of the Americas, organized in four viceroyalties, and several hearings and general captaincies.

During the 19th century, some of these colonies broke free, under several circumstances: Venezuela, Florida, Chile.

In 1927, the monarchy was abolished and in the process Spain lost some other colonies.

In 1980, the monarchy was restored, and Charles Bourbon was proclaimed king as Charles VI.
