The Global War

After signing a non-aggression pact with Germany, the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact, the Soviet Union waited to Germany to break the Ice in the European Scenario of the Global War, before launching an offensive to conquer all former lands of the Russian Empire. During late 1939 and early 1940 the Soviet Union annexed eastern Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia and fought the Winter War against Finland.

The threat of Fascist Germany however could not be tolerated and on May 20, 1941, the Soviet Union launched Operation Thunderstorm as a preemptive attack on Germany and her allies, managing to quickly overturn Romania while engaging in three years of a mobile front against Germany.

In 1944, after a coup-d'état against the Nazi regime Germany managed to negotiate an armistice with the Soviet Union and the Western Allies. The Soviet Union managed to get recognized the annexation of the Baltic Republics, eastern Poland, and Bessarabia, as well as the pro-Soviet regimes in Romania, Bulgaria, Yugoslavia, and Hungary.

In earlier 1945, after the settlement in Europe, the Soviet Union declared war to Japan with the goal to recover the territories lost in the Russo-Japanese War of 1905.
