Slovakia was originally an small empire that formed around 1685 and at its extent in 1725, it contained Slovakia, most of Poland, northern Hungary, parts of Romania and some Ukrainian lands. It lasted like so until 1790, when the land was ceded away by other countries though Slovakia itself remained independent. However, soon in 1848 it was conquered by Austria-Hungary. Then, after the Second World War Slovakia had gained independence with a democratic government, while Austria-Hungary went communist. Slovakia today has a very strong economy and excellent HDI, among other things. They also joined the European Union in 2003 and adopted the Euro as their official currency in 2008.
